Choosing the Right Shoes
Choosing the right shoes for your baby or toddler is an important step in supporting healthy foot development and confident movement. In the early years, little feet are soft, flexible and still growing, so footwear should allow them to move as naturally as possible rather than restrict them.
At Dotty Fish, all of our baby and toddler shoes are designed with a barefoot feel, helping little feet develop the way nature intended. Our shoes feature lightweight, flexible soles and a wide toe box, giving toes plenty of room to spread, grip and balance. This helps support stability, coordination and overall foot strength as your child learns to crawl, stand and walk.
As your little one grows from first movements to more confident steps, their footwear needs will change. That’s why it’s important to choose shoes based on their stage of development rather than their age. In this guide, we’ll help you understand which shoes are best at each stage, so you can feel confident you’re choosing the right pair for your child’s feet

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A FIRST SHOE
When buying those first pair of shoes for little feet it is worth remembering that barefoot is usually best, however shoes can provide protection and warmth while still giving a barefoot feel. Shoes for babies, toddlers and young children should be:
- Flexible so feet aren’t restricted.
- Lightweight - allowing for natural ankle, knee, and hip movement.
- Wide around the toes to allow feet to spread when standing.
- Thin soled so children’s toes can grip the floor in the same way as if they were barefoot.
- A snug fit so they don’t come off without restricting movement or growth.
- Made from a breathable, natural material like leather or canvas.
SOFT SOLE SHOES
Ideal for Crawling & First Steps
Soft sole shoes are the perfect choice for babies who are crawling, standing, or taking their very first steps. At this stage, little feet are still developing, so it’s important to keep them as natural and unrestricted as possible. Soft, flexible soles allow babies to feel the ground beneath them, helping to build balance, coordination and confidence as they learn to move.
Soft sole shoes are best suited for indoor use, making them an ideal first shoe before moving on to more structured styles as your child becomes a more confident walker.
RUBBER SOLE SHOES
For More Confident Little Walkers
Rubber sole shoes are a great next step once your child is walking more confidently and becoming steadier on their feet. They offer a little more grip and durability than soft sole shoes, while still keeping flexibility and comfort a priority. These shoes are ideal for little ones who are on the move but don’t yet need fully structured footwear.
Rubber sole shoes are perfect as a transition between soft sole shoes and more structured first walking shoes, giving your toddler a bit more support while still allowing their feet to develop naturally.
